LANGUAGE
Language refers to the words we hear and use to get what we want and to share our ideas.
People with language disorders may:
- have difficulty understanding
- finding the right words
- reading
- writing
- using correct grammar rules
- taking turns when talking
SPEECH
Speech is how we say sounds and words.
People with speech disorders may:
- not say sounds clearly
- mix up the sounds
- Adding extra sounds
- deleting sounds
STUTTERING
Stuttering is a speech problem that stops the flow of speech.
People with fluency disorders may:
- repeat sounds, syllables, words and phrases
- have difficulty starting a word, phrase or sentence
- grunt, say um or er a lot blink and move their body
VOICE
Voice is the basic sound we make for speech and signing.
People with voice disorders may:
- have a hoarse, husky, croaky, strained, strangled or shaky voice
- lose their voice
- clear their throat repeatedly
- find it effortful to talk
LITERACY
Literacy refers to the ability to read and write.
People with literacy disorders may:
- have difficulties with spelling capitalisation and punctuation
- not understand what they are reading
- confuse sounds when reading
- have difficulty organising and expressing ideas in writing
SWALLOWING
Swallowing is when food or drink moves from our throat to our stomach. A swallowing disorder is called dysphagia.
People with dysphagia may experience difficulties:
- Chewing
- Swallowing
- Drinking
- Controlling saliva
- Taking medications
- protecting the lungs from food and drink ‘going the wrong way’.
